In the first hours
- Use your right to speak to a lawyer before giving a statement. Your first statement to the police affects all later stages.
- Read the reports. Do not sign search, seizure or arrest reports that have not been read to you or that are in a language you do not understand; you have the right to ask for an interpreter.
- Keep the documents. Ask for a copy of the reports, the seizure record and the customs documents given to you.
- If you are a foreign national, follow the administrative process too. Deportation and administrative detention procedures may start alongside the criminal investigation, and their deadlines are very short. Details: Immigration lawyer in Edirne

Frequently asked questions
My relative was taken into custody at a border gate. What should I do?
A person in custody has the right to the assistance of a lawyer at every stage of the investigation and can ask for their relatives to be informed. Finding out at which gate, by which unit and on what allegation the person was taken into custody helps the lawyer reach the file quickly.
My vehicle or goods were seized. Can I get them back?
Seizure can be carried out as part of a criminal investigation or under customs legislation. Whether a vehicle or goods are returned depends on the legal basis of the seizure, the link between the goods and the offence, and the position of the vehicle’s owner; requests for return and objections to decisions are therefore prepared according to the type of file.
I was told at the border that I have an entry ban. What can I do?
Foreign nationals are usually refused entry. Keep the document and the record details given to you at the gate; depending on the type of record, an application to the Presidency of Migration Management to lift the ban or an annulment case is considered.
